Interview With Dave Harvey

By Rick "The Screamer" Lindner 02/12/2012

Rick/D2S: Thank you for checking in with us and welcome to the Dead-to-Self rock community! It is great to have you in the family!

DH/MR: Thank you very much, glad to be a part of it.

Rick/D2S: Millennial Reign screams of classic Christian rock/metal with big guitars and harmonies. That pretty much makes you a natural fit here at D2S Radio for sure! It is always great to find a band that is willing to go out there and create this style of music, thank you!

DH/MR: Well of course age plays a huge part of it, but that’s what we all grew up with. Bands like Stryper, Dokken, Iron Maiden and Queensryche; heavy, but melodic with good vocal work and harmonies. It’s just what naturally flows when it comes to writing the material.

Rick/D2S: In listening to your new release that just came out 1.22.12 I am reminded of what I loved so much about bands like Rage of Angels, Whitecross, and Eternal Ryte. Bold lyrics and melodic rock hooks that go on for days. Also, for fans new to Christian metal that may have been fans of mainstream rock bands such as LA Guns, XYZ, Dokken, Hericane Alice and the like are going to find something to get excited about here as well.

DH/MR: Well that was our target audience; the market has been flooded with bands that in my opinion all use the same musicians with Scott Stapp on vocals (laughs). There is a hunger for classic melodic metal bands. The tribute band scene all over the U.S. proves that it’s still alive and in demand.

Rick/D2S: A couple of tracks that stand out to me right away are “We Are The Ones” and “Run For Your Life” and “Live Forever”. Give us a little background on those fine songs for someone that might not have had the chance to hear them yet.

DH/MR: “We Are The Ones” is simply a youthful anthem. It’s just one of those songs that makes you want to rock and tell the world who you belong to. “Run For Your Life” is more of a warning message. Lyrics “The time has come, the fields are white” meaning time is very short, what’s going on in your life that is worth losing your soul. “Live Forever” is pretty self-explanatory. Christ is reaching out to people on a daily basis, it’s up to us to hear or ignore it.

Rick/D2S: Speaking of “We Are The Ones”, that particular song has become a favorite among fans here at D2S reaching to Top 5 requests over the last week. Congrats!

DH/MR: Wow… I had no idea! You know, something just came to mind. We had a bit of a rocky start with this after we finished recording. We were on a record label and things went south with them extremely fast. We decided to part with them and afterwards went back to remix and master the CD because we weren’t happy with it. We trusted God in releasing this thing independently and several pleasant surprises such as this one has arisen. Abraham called the mountain “God will provide” and He definitely has.

Rick/D2S: Talk about the emotions as a musician when you hear your music being played on a station such as D2S.

DH/MR: That’s something that brings out the youth in all of us. No matter how many years we’ve been doing this, everyone loves hearing their music air played. Whether it be on internet or over the air radio, it’s all good! And let me go on to say it’s a blessing that people like you feel the calling to do this. There are so many good bands out there that would never be heard if it weren’t for people and stations like this.

Rick/D2S: What do you hope fans will take away for your lyrics and message with your music?

DH/MR: Well as any Christian band, we hope the message gets through. But on the other hand we just want people to enjoy it. Even though we serve a mighty God, we still have fun and ROOOOOOOCK! (Laughs)…. (High Michael Sweet singing voice)

Rick/D2S: I dig the cover artwork with this release as well. Talk about the artist you worked with for this and how the collaboration came to be.

DH/MR: I dig the cover artwork with this release as well. Talk about the artist you worked with for this and how the collaboration came to be. That would be Matt Story at Rockhouse Graphics. I live in the DFW area and am around a lot of well-known bands and musicians, Aska, Omen, ex-members of Pantera etc. Matt is the vocalist for Omen and has his own graphic art company. I met Matt when I moved here around the end of 2006. He does a lot of work for local and semi local musicians/bands. I had the concept of what I wanted, just verbalized it to him and he did the rest. He’s very good at what he does.

Rick/D2S: Any plans to go on tour in 2012 or at least play some live shows to support the new project?

DH/MR: Yes, we plan to begin booking shows when possible. MR started as a CD project and after finishing the recording we decided to form it into a live band. Finding the right bass player and keyboardist is first priority. Also our drummer Bryan pastor’s a church and isn’t able to do long distance shows or major touring. Whitecross drummer Michael Feighan is a good friend of mine and lives in the area so he will be stepping in to help out when the time comes.

Rick/D2S: As a fan of music yourself, who have been some of your biggest musical inspirations? Also, who do you listen to today?

DH/MR: I would have to say bands like Iron Maiden, Dokken, Queensryche, Stryper and even Petra were my biggest early influences. The last 10 or more years I’ve really become more of a progressive and power metal fan. As of today I listen to bands like Circus Maximus, Rob Rock, Aska, Firewind, Edguy and there’s a prog-metal band from Mexico City called Agora that is awesome. I have a complete album of this genre written and a name idea as well; just kind of sitting on it for now because I have other projects going.

Rick/D2S: If you could change one thing about the current music climate, what would it be and why?

DH/MR: Call it nostalgia if you want but I would like to see the 80’s metal scene return. Today’s music is so dark and depressing… practically every song states how “I hate you and you hate me”, absolutely nothing fun and enjoyable about life like the music of the 80’s. Everything was larger than life and living to the fullest. We need to return to that as a culture.

Rick/D2S: What is the best way fans can pick up this great new release?

DH/MR: CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, practically any reputable internet music outlet will stock it.

Rick/D2S: Anything you would like to add to conclude our time? God Bless.

DH/MR: Just that I really appreciate what you’re doing and the time you put in. Bands like MR need people like you to help get the word out.
